I was snapping away with the camera, but I like to get at least one sketch done whenever I visit somewhere inspiring. Sketches can contain information that just can't be recorded in a photo. I can really get to grips with the form of the subject matter before using the sketches in conjunction with photos to create a finished painting. With winter coming its best to set yourself a deadline of 20 minutes - your fingers will get cold! Try to prioritise what you are going to draw - record the important information in the time that you have rather than aim to create a finished detailed drawing.
Also, if you accidentally delete your photos/hard drive crashes - you still have your drawings. If your sketchbook gets misplaced (heaven forbid) you still have your photos..
